Meat Pie

It still feels like Christmas and what better than a mince meat pie to spice up the table. This isn't a traditional mince pie because I have not added any nuts or berries. I have made this with minced meat and vegetables.

Get the recipe for pie crust here.

Ingredients:

500 gms minced meat
2 medium onions diced
8-10 garlic pods
2 medium potatoes, boiled and mashed
1 small carrot diced
1/4 cup peas
2 tbs mustard sauce
2 tbsp worcestershire sauce
1 tsp dried mixed herbs, more if needed
1/4 tsp allspice powder
1 tsp fresh ground pepper, more if needed
2 tbsp olive oil
Salt to taste
1 7-inch pie crust
1 egg, for egg wash
Nigella seeds to sprinkle (optional)

Method:

Heat oil, fry the garlic. Once you get the flavour of the garlic, add the carrots and onion. Keep trying till it's translucent and caramalised.

Add the minced meat. Add the pepper, mustard and worcestershire sauce.

Add salt and herbs. Then add the peas. Cool till done.

If any water releases let it evaporate but ensure the meat isn't too dry.

Then finally add the potatoes, mix well.

Take a pie dish and line the bottom and sides with pie crust. You can bake the pie crust for about 15 minutes at 150 degrees.

Then put in the meat filling and cover the top with another layer of the pie crust.

Poke holes on the top of the crust. Now use a brush and paint the top of the pie with the egg. Sprinkle some nigella seeds if using.

Bake at 200 degrees for 40 minutes. Check once at about 20 minutes and reduce the heat to 150-170 degrees if the sides start browning too soon.

Let it rest for ten minutes before you eat. Enjoy.
