Pie Tart or Crust

A nicely flaky pie tart or puff pastry is a good trick to have up one's sleeve. Because once one knows how to make one, the opportunities are endless- for both sweet and savory delights.

Few things to note while making a pie crust is "cold". You will need cold butter and ice-cold water. This is what gives the pie its flaky texture.

The ingredients below will make one 7 inch pie crust.

Ingredients:

All Purpose Flour-1 cup
Cold Butter- 50 gms
Sugar- 1 tbsp ( ground/granulated as per preference)
Salt- 1 tsp
Ice ColdWater- 1/4 cup approx

Method:

Preferably use a cold surface or a marble top to prepare the pie crust.

Cube the butter.

Add the sugar and salt to the flour. Mix it with your fingers.

Then add the butter and make a crumbly mix. The butter need not be finely mixed with the flour, else you will not get a flaky texture.

Now add water little by little and brind the dough together. You might not need to use all the water.

When the dough comes together you will be able to see some fat on the dough. That is absolutely fine.

Now freeze this dough for about two hours.

Take it out and roll it using a rolling pin, and use it as per your recipe.

If the recipe demands a pre-baked pie crust, then bake this for 15-20 minutes on a preheated oven at 150 degrees. When done the sides should come out and become slightly brown.
